New Street Station History Project
From 2010-15, New Street Station in Birmingham was extensively redeveloped. The original station opened in 1854. Did you know it was built on the site of a prison, and a cemetery? (The graves were moved before building work began!)
In 2014-15, MAT worked with groups of young people, to research the history of the station. The project was funded by Heritage Lottery Fund Young Roots scheme.
In November 2015, we held an exhibition in the station itself. Students from Newman University dressed in costume as people from the station's past. More details here.
Young people from Al-Hijrah School undertook an Oral History interview with Richard Foster. Young people from George Dixon Academy interviewed David Moore and James Taylor. More details here.
The Ghosts of New Street Station
Young people from North Birmingham Academy imagined what kind of ghosts from the past might haunt the station today - and made films about them! More details here.
