Prospero's Island by David Calcutt

David Calcutt's play Prospero's Island is a kind of prequel to Shakespeare's The Tempest.

David observes: 'What I was doing was taking Shakespeare's characters and setting them free to improvise a new story, using The Tempest as a kind of souding-board, rather than keeping them confined to the straightjacket of the original play.'

The MAT production set the play on an imaginary African island; it was directed by Michael Aduwali, and toured in 2002-4.
